How calibrate my monitor?

Is it necessary to calibrate your laptop monitor?

I'm seriously contemplating on buying SpyderProElite because I've heard that's all the rage when it comes to colour calibration. However, most of the time they calibrate a proper monitor (and what I mean by 'proper' is a separate monitor to your CPU). I have a VAIO E Series. So far, I like what I'm seeing in my computer, but I'm really unsure if it delivers the goods because at times when I printed it off a professional lab they turn out to be oversaturated - is the problem with my laptop, the lab's monitor, or the lab's printer? I'm just curious how much of a change will I get from buying SpyderProElite to my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much!
