Magnavox TV, how do I get the sound to work as a monitor connected to my computer?

We have a Maganvox HD monitor that I was using in my room for a while but we recently started using it as a computer monitor but cant get the sound to work. My dad connected an audio cord.. (I dont really know what its called) from the back of the tv to the computer but that hasn't worked.. Ive tried to use headphones or SOMETHING but I just cant get any sound.. Does anyone know anything about this? How I can get the sound to actually play from SOMETHING..? Thanks
