Does it matter what kind monitor you have for a graphics card?

Well my DVI cable is messed up on the flat screen and I just got a new computer... bought a pretty nice graphics card and im going to install it but im using a fairly old monitor... uses vga (duh) but I was wondering If I install it will I get problems as far as my monitor is concerned? ( love how fast this 3G Ram is far better than my old compy which runs on 256 mb XD)
