How can I set up my dual screen on my PC?
-
Calling all techies! I need some help! Trying to set up a dual screen and have two VGA monitors. My main monitor is connected to the DVI-I on the VGA card using a converter. The second monitor needs to connect into either DVI-D, HDMI or USB using a converter. Is this possible and where can I buy a converter? Not had any luck with the computer shops in town and they couldn't give me any more info other than looking on ebay. If it isn't possible to do that, is it possible to get a DVI-I converter that turns into a VGA splitter? So have two monitors connected to the same DVI-I socket?

Hi there just to help you out better could you give us the following information 1)what graphics card does the computer have? if you dont know then you can use GPUz which is a little program that tell you what youre using http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2092/mirrors.php As for DVi splitters, ive seen cables that go from a single DVI to two d-sub (blue) ports, however i cant tell you if thats reliable or not. From what i remember from back in the day you would connect one port to one monitor because splitters caused image distortion when split into two. something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003V4TV9I :D update question! [EDIT] Since its a HD6800 series graphics card then this should be straight forward because as far as i know those cards have 2 DVI ports and some HDMI+mini HDMI ports try not to split the signal over one cable From what you say you have a second monitor that accepts HDMI? if thats the case, then check the card first and you should see an HDMI or mini HDMI port on it. You can get HDMI to HDMI cables or mini HDMI to HDMI for that That way you can control both monitors separately via the ATI catalyst control centre :D HDMI to mini HDMI http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001NXK86Y HDMI to HDMI http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001R660DM The HDMI cables will give you a good signal output with minimal interference from the cables around it! If you want to connect it via DVI but you only have that one DVI port thats already used, then you can use a HDMI to dvi cable (The type of DVi would be DVI-I since it integrates both analogue to analogue or digital to digital, or a DVi-D .) hope that helps a bit! :D [edit number 2] right! Split that DVi-i connection with a dvi splitter cable then you can connect 2 d-sub cables to the splitter and connect the monitors only thing is that it will display the image twice, theres no way to extended desktop and stuff converting DVi-D to analogue isn't something straight forward since you cant stream the digital information and put it straight into an analogue display without some conversion (apparently expensive, havent found one yet) D:

First of all you'll need a very powerful GPU or 2x GPU's to run dual monitors.. Yes you need a converter, they're available online..
First you have to make sure your video card supports dual monitoring, extended or anything else. If it does, what type of connector is the second monitor? If it is a VGA connector, then you need a DVI to VGA connector. And yes you can have a DVI connector branch into 2 VGA connectors if that the route you want to go. Its called a splitter, VGA to DVI. It is possible, also make sure you get the correct DVI-I cable, they have DVI-D, and also DVI-A, they look the same on the outside, but check how the pins look and the count, and match em up. Good luck.
add a second video card and cut to the chase..
