Is there a way to connect to cable tv through my pc?

Is there a way to use my TV as a monitor from my PC in another room?

  • Here's my setup: I have a custom built PC in my office. Directly on the other side of some glass doors is my living room, which has my plasma TV. I have an ethernet cable running from the router in my office through the wall to a network hub that sits behind the TV in the living room, to which I connect things like my Xbox 360, Blu-Ray player, and TV. I still have a port or two open on the hub, so I was trying to figure out a way I could use that ethernet connection as basically a way to view my PC on the TV. And I don't mean like just Windows Media Center. I already have the 360 doing that. But I actually want to be able to view EVERYTHING on the computer....like browse websites from the living room, use programs, etc. Essentially use my TV as a monitor without having to running video and audio cables from my PC, through the wall, and to the TV. Any ideas?

Sadly, I do not think this is possible on the cheap, especially without knowing the model of TV (although I don't think any TV on the market can natively do this). Simple reason is, the Ethernet connection on your TV is to enable the internet on the TV, this would use the TV's browser software to browse the internet in the TV's limited way. It simply is a browser. They do not allow the installation of any additional software to enable remote desktop solutions to it. OPTIONS I presume that because your TV has an ethernet connection available, it is a newish LCD TV of some description. This should also have a few HDMI connectors. There is hardware out there that allows you to wirelessly transmit video to the PC using two devices. Here are examples of such equipment (noted in sources). Your transmitter is by your PC, connected via different options (HDMI, VGA, and others depending on the transmitter). This sends the images/sound to the receiver thats by your TV that uses the HDMI to broadcast it on the screen. Problem with this, is you would need a wireless keyboard and mouse to still control the PC from where it is. Other option would be to use an old second hand machine and install remote desktop support and have that linked wirelessly, but thats a whole different boardgame that I dont have time to explain how to set up right now sorry. Send me a mail if you would like and I'd be happy to talk more in depth with you when available, just got a call and have to pop out.
