CAN I USE MY TV AS A COMPUTER MONITOR?

Can I use a computer monitor as a TV? If so - how or what would I need to do?

  • Hello everyone! I was going to get a new TV for my room at school, but it led to me think - could I use a computer monitor instead to watch TV? I have a laptop with VGA output (no HDMI), and getting a cable wouldn't be a problem at all. I'm aware that you can hook up laptops nowadays, to an external monitor (mirroring the screen). I've done this before, and it has turned out fine. However - if I want to watch tv shows (like with channels and whatnot) - would it still be possible? What would I need to do in order to achieve this? I know that there are sites like HULU and such, but is there anyway to hook up a computer monitor to use as a substitute for a TV? Thanks!

  • Answer:

You need a TV tuner board in your computer, but they only fit in desktops not lap tops.

Other answers

Generally not. TV broadcasts (typically) are about 400 lines of resolution, most monitors start at a low end of 800x600 resolution so the viewing of the video would be small on the monitor. Watching TV on your PC is possible with adapters/software but just plugging a monitor (generic monitor, not one designed to do both) to a cable/satelite/antena signal won't work, you'd have to go through a converter to get the output needed for a monitor.
