The only external port on my laptop is a VGA port but my tv does not have this, it only has HDMI . Is it possible to use a VGA to component cable such as this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-Component-Cable-0-91M-Black/dp/B000P3NZ68 to connect my taptop to the tv? thanks

Probably not. This type of cable is used to go from Component OUTPUT into a VGA INPUT. Not the other way around. VGA signals are completely different from your standard Component video signal and you would need an actual converter box in order for it to work properly.
