Sound on my laptop not working... what do I do?

It was working fine about an hour ago, then it suddenly stopped working. I have a Sony Vaio PCG-71213L with a partitioned hard-drive running Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7, and the sound doesn't work on either OS. (I can tell that it's not a driver install problem from this) The sound doesn't work either when I plug in my headphones, or when I unplug them. (It's not a busted speaker either) Also, yes, I've checked if its on mute and I've restarted it several times. I'd be very happy if anyone could help me with this. Thanks!

If it doesnt work in either OS, then your sound board is out. Its a hardware fault. Many Sonys have a seperate sound board that can be replaced without replacing the whole maiboard. Also there is a usb sound card that can be bought , that plugs into your usb ports (a MUCH cheaper fix). Am I an expert? YES! I own 2 computer repair shops in Las Vegas for 17 years.

Go Start / Control Panel Device Manager / Sound,Video and Game Controller.Look,if there is a yellow exclamation sign.Click on it,read a description.The reason might be in corrupted or missing audio driver.Then you need to reinstall the audio driver.the best is Realtek Hidh Definition Audio Driver.

mess with the sound options in control panel can't really help with that unless im there to see the problem
