My Sony VAIO won't boot up?

I have a 2008 Sony Vaio laptop, PCG-7Y1L, VGN-N385E and cannot boot up.?

  • When I attempt to boot up, I get the messages: "Insert Windows Installation disc and restart" and "system registry file is missing or corrupt." Sony esupport suggests that I use F8 on boot up and at Advanced Boot Options, select "Repair your computer", but this is not in Advanced Boot Options. Suggestions?

  • Answer:

There are a couple of things to try. If you have the Windows disk you can do what it says and you will then get the repair option. If you do not have one, try to borrow one - just make sure it is exactly the same OS as on your computer. Try booting with a live Ubuntu CD then run chkdsk. That may fix the corruption. The last resort would be to do a complete factory restore knowing that you will lose all of your data.
