Laptop not recognizing my hard drive anymore?

Why isn't my laptop recognizing my new hard drive? BIOS key?

  • Installed new Hitachi travelstard SATA drive in a compaq NX6310 laptop. Goes thru the motions of installing XP OS but then says no hard drive detected. Took software disc out and powered up and just have blank screen with flashing cursor. not sure if I am in the right BIOS screen or not. it gives me options for F8 boot or F10. F10 doesn't show the HDD anywhere and gives me no advance options to add. Did do the HDD self test and all passed but again, after trying to install the OS, it either says not HDD detected or now a sparrow.sys is corrupted message. ??????????????

  • Answer:

It's possible that the XP install you're using doesn't have the driver file for your OS, you may want to look on Compaq's site and see if they have something you need to use to let it work. You may also want to try a Linux distro like Ubuntu, see if that works. Then you'd know it wasn't a hardware issue.
