Why does my HP laptop hang or freeze?

Anyone having problems with Gateway laptop NV53A24u?

  • My friend just bought this laptop brand new from Best Buy. I am a recent Computer Engineering grad and recommended this laptop to a friend of mine due to it being very very fast.. It has 4gb ddr3 running at 1066mhz with a dual core processor... Windows 7 home premium I believe 64bit but not absolutely sure. I am writing this because I recommended this laptop for him, and he bought it I am usually over at his house hanging out and tend to use his laptop once in a while and notice that it tends to hang a lot, with the hard drive light remaining on, and it basically freezes up, and shows a circle with an arrow going round and round like its "busy" doing something, or like the old school sand minute counter that used to pop up.. Now windows 7 has a blue circle that does an arrow that just goes round and round, and I try to do anything at all it will just hang... Pressing ctrl+alt+delete doesn't do anything... Finally you hear a beep like system did something, but it beeps, and eventually comes out of the freeze... So random though at times, we will be watching a youtube video for instance. 20 Seconds into the movie, it freezes up the video, audio is still playing, and it does the dark screen where it pops up the blue arrow like its "waiting or busy" doing something.... It is just pathetic, I have a 1gb ddr ram 1.8ghz turion gateway laptop that runs way better then his laptop, and I am trying to get to the bottom of it, but I can't figure out what windows 7 is doing that keeps locking his system up.... It is so annoying because I recommended this computer, I am an A+ Certified computer technician, and I am unable to correct this problem he is having.. I cannot tell whether its a device driver doing it or whether windows 7 is doing something that I do not know about that is freezing the machine up. It has a 320gb 5400rpm hard drive which maybe the problem, but Ive ran chkdsk on it and it fixed all mislabled indexes and so forth, and still does the hang ups... Not sure if anyone has a NV53A24u Gateway Laptop and has had this issue, and knows a possible cause and solution that would be excellent... Basically I thought startup program, or possibly the antivirus software that comes with the machine? Although, frustrates me because his machine should be running smooth as butter, not crappy and hanging up everytime you go and watch a youtube video, or on ebay just going through auction listings... just seems like the laptop is hanging up for a reason, and when it hangs, it hangs, you cannot open anything, click anything.. mouse you can move but it has that round blue circle of "waiting..." and Beep and a few minutes later its able to be used again... but from what I can tell, there is no real memory hogging programs running besides the AV, and windows 7 itsself.... theres some synaptics (synaptics enhanced w/ touchpad graph) stuff that loads, and some ati stuff that loads (mom, CCC). Other then that the AV loads and I cannot tell what is causing the system to hang like it does... but it is very annoying. I am thinking a reinstall of the o/s but if that don't take the problem away... not sure whats at fault. Thanks Microsoft for releasing yet another troublesome windows operating system.

    Hi, sorry to tell you but it's your "NV53A24u Gateway Laptop", Gateway make rubbish systems, my twin brother brought one about two years ago and had to have it replaced "TWO times". and the Gateway help desk was telling him rubbish as well well his hard drive failed. so poor system, NO Support and over priced he then got an "ACER" and has no problems with it. so you now know what to do as well ???

Windows 7 is great go get a wife.

Acer/gateway/emachine make some of the worst machines in the biz. (Just ask ANY tech. We NEVER deploy in industry because of poor reliability, higher total cost of ownership and even worse support. (ALL tech support is bad now days, but a/e/g takes the cake). Despite the phenominal "mediocrity" of a/e/g this is NOT their fault. The slow loading of web pages and the circle when loading a utube video is PROBABLY buffering, it is probably not your computer's fault. Reboot your modem/router. Do a speed test at a RELIABLE place like speedtest.net If you are a recent computer engineering grad as you claim, you know that Windows 7 is absolutely NOT the issue in this case. You would have known NEVER to recommend, let alone use a gateway. And if you're a comp eng grad, why would you brag about an A+? That is the very lowest certification there is. As mediocre as a/e/g is, third party application issues are NOT their fault. This is also NOT a Model specific" issue. Based on what you describe so far, most of the techs here would be about 99% sure it is a bad applications on your system. What have you downloaded, or installed? It is pretty certain you have some "vampire" applications. Go into task manager and check the processes and services tabs and see if anything is taking alot. Use your cpu meter (part of windows gadgets) to see cpu usage. Go into event viewer. Do you get any error messages in windows? EDIT: @ william k...... acer is the same company as gateway. He just got lucky on one and unlucky on the other. Unfortunately, It won't be long before he will be calling them again.
