My Sony Vaio VGN-S260 running XP SP2 keeps rebooting itself. What is the problem?
-
My laptop is about 4 years old and has been running fine until I decided to give it to my sister, so I formatted the hard drive so she can get a fresh computer. All the new drivers are installed and everything works fine, except for the fact that it will reboot itself every once in a while. First I see a blue screen, but I can't read it because it only flashes on the screen before it reboots, and when the system comes up, it says "The system has recovered for a serious error" and then it says "A log of this error has been created" and then it asks me if I want to report the error to microsoft. What is this error? and how do I fix it?

Answer:
Rebooting is sometimes caused by corrpted files. You might try running CHKDSK /p The /P switch fixed my boot loop problem with XP Pro. This has to be run with windows not running I used my windows XP CD to do this if you dont have one use the START RUN command type chkdsk /p then OK this has to be a schedule task on the next Boot Up. You can get the complete instructions on how to do this if you GOOGLE chkdsk /p

Hi, The first thing to do is to go to control panel, system, advanced, start up and recovery. In there make sure the box marked restart on error is not ticked. Now when the pc hits an error you will see the bsod and be able to get the error message. You can also get the error message in, control panel, administrative tools, event logs. Once you have the message just mail me and I'll try and help. Arnak
You need to take it to profecinals like geek squad
First if possible try to backup (copy) your important data (pictures, files, music, etc.). You might have to get some technical support from a company like Geek Squad or a local PC technician but it will not be cheap. \Next try to find or acquire a Windows XP boot disk. Do you have XP Home or Professional. Since each copy of Windows has a unique key, you can actually borrow the disk from a friend if you a label on PC that give you activation code. Once you get the disk and the code, then boot the PC from this disk. Give it a few minutes and try to access the recovery console function. If this is not available, try to access the repair/reinstall Windows without deleting the hard drive partition. If this does not work, then delete the partition and then do a complete reinstall. If you try to access the Windows boot window and still have the same problem, it is also possible that you may have a hard drive problem or a power supply problem.
A BSOD (short for Blue Screen Of Death), usually signals a hardware failure.
