How much does it cost to repair a laptop dvd drive?

• Hello everyone--While carrying my laptop in a backpack, I had accidentally swung the backpack off my shoulder and into the side of a car. The force of the impact seemed to jar the laptop's dvd drive off its axis. The computer doesn't recognize it, and the open button doesn't work, so I'm assuming that the connection to the motherboard is kaput. Physically, the dvd drive is protruding out of the side of the laptop a bit as well. I've pretty clueless as to how much a repair like this would cost. I could certainly purchase a dvd drive unit myself to keep material costs down, but overall, what's a reasonable price for a dvd drive plus labor. Thanks!

  I would check eBay for a replacement. It should be easy to install yourself. You may just have to go to the computer manufacturer's support site and look at their repair manual to figure out how to disassemble the laptop, but if you're at all technical it shouldn't be too difficult. (I do it for clients all the time.) At eBay, just search for <Your manufactuer & model> DVD Drive - you'll be surprised how inexpensive it is. e.g. "Dell Inspiron 6400 DVD". Good luck!
