Using wireless G laptop to access a wireless N network? Is it too far away for my laptop to pick it up?
-
I understand that wireless N routers transmit further than old wireless g routers. I tried to use my dad's laptop which has old wireless G to connect to my local library's wireless N network. I can't get on the library's network from my house (I'm about 2 blocks too far to connect to their network in my house). SO here is my questions. I know I won't get wireless N speeds if my laptop only has old wireless G capabilities I understand that already. I want to know if I get a laptop that has newer wireless N network capabilities, will I probably be able to reach the library's wireless signal from my house? I know their wireless N network is reaching out as far as they can send it but my old wireless G laptop still can't reach the library's network from my house. It is about 2 blocks too far away from it. So I was hoping if I bought a new laptop with a new wireless N card , that my outgoing signal would reach further to where I could pick up the libraries wireless N signal? Is this a realistic expectation? Or even if I get a wireless N laptop, would I still not be able to reach their signal at my house? I was hoping that the wireless N laptop would be able to reach out further and pick up the library network even though my current wireless G laptop can't reach the library's network now.

Answer:
Uh... you could just buy a wireless N dongle and try it yourself. It only costs $15 from Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833186012 Wireless N has an indoor range of UP TO 300m, G is 100m. Emphasis on the "UP TO". Different environments and different hardware can yield different results. So yeah, probably, you might be able to pickup library Wifi signals with a Wireless N adapter upgrade.
