Why is my laptop still charging when the battery is not plugged in?

My laptop battery isn't charging even though the power adapter is plugged in. Help?

  • I have the AC power adapter that came with my computer plugged in, but the battery isn't charging. If I remove the adapter from the computer and plug it back in I get the following message: The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your sistem will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation. I'm using the adapter that came with my computer. I'm using a Dell Inspiron running Windows Vista. I've done virus scans since this issue has happened, but it shows up nothing. I use Avira AntiVir Personal Free, in terms of antivirus stuff. How can I get my laptop to recognize the power adapter that came with it???

    Your charger is probably shot, luckily they aren't that expensive.

Take your battery and charger down to the local Radio Shack and have them test both the battery and battery charger. One or both may need to be replaced. They should have substitutes available at their store that will work. If your laptop is 3 or 4 years old, this is a definite possibility. You may want to take the entire laptop so they can look at what it does when plugged into an AC outlet. Good luck!

The Battery could also be shot. Does it stay on when plug it in? If so the Battery is shot.
