Sound on laptop not working, hotkey sound works , equalizer works?

  • Hi, I've a small problem, well maybe others have experienced this. I've a HP laptop DV6240 serie. vista 32bit ultimate is installed on it. the sound on the laptop just stopped working, the sound can be heard when i press the hotkeys, just a "tick" sound when pressing the hotkey buttons. and when playing a video or mp, in the mixer you can see the sound go up and down, the source output changes like it should when switching from speaker to headphone when a headphone is plugged in, but still no sound. thanks :)

  • Answer:

Silent Speakers If sound is not coming out of the speakers of your laptop when it's supposed to, open the laptop's control panel menu to gain access to a sounds, speech and audio devices option. This menu will assist in the diagnosis of why sound is not working on your laptop computer. Troubleshooting Open the sound troubleshooters menu that should appear on the left side of the monitor. This menu will ask basic questions relating to the symptoms of the sound issue and then guide you through a step-by-step process to determine any underlying cause of sound not being present. A commonly encountered issue that prevents sound from being heard on a computer occurs when a damaged CD or sound file is played. Try changing to a new CD or audio file to achieve sound. Volume Control Check the master volume settings on the laptop. This is located within the control panel menu as well. The problem of having no sound may be as simple as the volume settings being too low, or due to the audio being in a muted state. Ensure that the "Mute All" box does not contain a check mark; remove it if it does. Locate the external laptop volume control dial, if equipped with one, to ensure it is not turned down or off. Other Scenarios It may be possible that the sound device itself is flawed in some way, thus prohibiting the production of sound. This can be confirmed by plugging in a different set of speakers, or headphones, in an attempt to hear sound. Another commonly experienced sound problem involves trying to use outdated sound drivers. To determine if your sound driver needs to be updated, you may contact Microsoft update via its website (see Resources section). If the sound driver is out of date, then you will need to contact the manufacturer of the sound device to request an updated version. Consider contacting Microsoft support should none of these methods alleviate the sound problems on your laptop computer (see Resources section).
