How much RAM/Memory and Hard Drive should i get for my macbook pro?
-
I am getting the 13'' macbook pro and was wondering how much RAM i should and Hard disk space i should get: I will be running maybe 8-10 applications at once. Maybe a word document, multiple internet browsers, MSN/AIM and a few other various programs (at once). Should i stick with the 2GB RAM or upgrade to 4GB? Hard Disk: I am upgrading to 250 GB, but should i get more? 320 GB? I want it to last me 4 years of college. I definitely wont be playing games on it. I wont be using major editing software, just the stuff that comes with ilife once in a while. I dont have much music or photos/videos. 250 songs, 15 photos, 1 video. What's best? Here's what i was thinking: # 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo # 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB # 250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm Will i need 4GB, though? or only 2 GB, because it cost $90 more for 4 GB. It's a 2.26GHz processor

Since you are running many programs at once, I would go with the 4GB. That's what I have and I love it. I run several programs at once with no problem. If I had only two, I'm sure I would hate my computer. And, 250 GB should be plenty. It would take a lot more than 250 songs and 15 photos to fill that sucker up.
You won't be happy. 8-10 apps at once? About 8-10GB of RAM and that means a 64 bit OS. (You could get away with 6GB - but that's still a 64 bit OS.) For 4 years, if you don't do much, a 250GB drive is plenty. (You can store thousands of short Word docs in 1GB.) If you want room, at least 1TB (a Seagate 1TB 7200.12 drive is only $89). I'd suggest a PC - a 64 bit Macbook with 6GB of RAM is going to cost.
Upping the memory is the best and usually least expensive upgrade you can do. By adding more memory you are giving the CPU more workspace to shuffle data around. It is an upgrade definately worth doing. Apple will charge you about $100 to do this upgrade, the memory can be had for about half that if you or someone you trust can install it. HDD size will depend on how much you want to store on it. Photos take little space, MP3s take up more space, videos take up even more space. If you have the budget, up the drive to 320Gig. I would advise against the larger 500Gig drive, I have been reading about unresolved issues with the MacBook Pro's and the 500Gig drive. You can also just go with the stock HDD and if you get close to filling it up at a later date get an external HDD. You didn't ask, but stick with the 2.26GHz CPU, I feel that the upgrade to the 2.53GHz CPU is too expensive and highly doubt that you would ever feel the difference of the .27Ghz increase.
