My sound doesnt work on my laptop... Can anybody help?

I recently took a short trip away and left my laptop with my sister. When I came back my laptop no longer made any sounds. When I play music, videos etc it just wont produce any sound. Even when i put speakers or earphones in it still doesnt produce any sound. One really annoying thing on top of all this is that when i start up the laptop it makes a very loud crackling noise similar to that of an old TV set with signal. This sound normally lasts for about 10 - 15 seconds then stops. After which no sound whatsoever comes out of the laptop. I have tried to restore to a previous point but this still didnt work. Can anybody help me? Please?

you can try to run a system restore back to the last time it worked to check if its a software problem, but the crackling sound does sound like a short in the wiring, dod the laptop get knocked at all? http://www.computer-adviser.com/restore-system.html
