There is no sound through VGA, the newer HDMI cables are both sound and video. If you can use HDMI its the easiest.

The cable suggested may not be o.k for you for two reasons. 1 your VGA output on the laptop is usually at the back and the headphone jack plug often at the front,so don't think that it will be long enough. 2. the sound input on your TV for the VGA input may not be a Jack plug input. It is quite often RCA (red/white plugs). So check on your TV close to the VGA plug is there a jack plug input probably label PC or 2x RCA plugs coloured Red and White Either way you can just buy the correct cable for sound separately.

The shop guy is wrong since VGA handles audio only. There are multiple ways to connect your PC or laptop to a TV. Here are the basic options: 1. Connect directly from PC to TV directly on a common interface - if they have one: HDMI - the best option if available SVGA S-Video Composite Video (RCA) 2. Convert your PC video output to a TV type signal with an inexpensive converter. These usually offer multliple interfaces. Make sure you get one that integrates the audio - some cheap models handle video only. So bottom line, if you have a new PC and TV look for a way to connect them directly, most likely HDMI. If either one is old use a converter.
