Probably dust and junk in the contacts. Here's how an IT tech told me to fix my Dell: place the laptop on a hard, flat surface, and slap the top of it below the keyboard, next to the slide pad, sharply with four fingers. Do this on both sides of the mouse pad. Sharply, but not hard enough to dislodge the keyboard keys. It may take a couple of tries. I did this, and it worked. This dislodges any junk that's worked its way under the mouse keys.

Parts can wear down but you can try adjusting the "Mouse" settings in the control panel (everybody knows how to get to the control panel from the start menu right?) to see if that works. If nothing else you can switch the function of the left click to the right click and the right click to the left click. Also if you have a touchpad (don't all laptops these days?) you should be able to tap and/or double tap on that and it will have the same effect as a left click/double click. This again you can adjust under the mouse settings.
