Which wireless router and/or network adapter to choose?

  • I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and want to add an inexpensive wireless router to be able to use my Kindle Fire. I have a Comcast internet modem. I looked at the Cisco E1200 and the D-Link Systems ethernet adapter. Actually, I have no idea what I should be looking for. If distance is a consideration, I would be using the Kindle within about a 500 sq. ft. area, but mostly right near my computer. Another question is, if I turn off my computer (which I do every night), will I lose the wireless connection? I want to use the Kindle to take to bed and set ESPN Streak for the Cash picks so I don't have to sit at my computer half the night waiting for the next pick.

  • Answer:

Your computer does not affect the availability of your wireless network. You should still be able to connect your kindle fire to the internet.

Your modem connects to the router and stays on 24/7 . It makes no difference if your desktop is linksys or off. The router will have 4 ports like the back, you will connect your computer directly via a cable. Thus you do not need a wireless adaptor. Since the kindle fire supports wireless n make sure your wireless router is a n model. I avoid linksys/ cisco as the lack support. The best routers currently are made by Asus but the are more expensive.

Just get a wireless router that supports IEEE 802.11N and has 4 ports of Ethernet. The router connects via it's "WAN" or "Internet" port to the Comcast modem, then the Dell connects via Ethernet to the router. I assume the Dell already has an Ethernet port, but I don't know for sure. If the Dell connects to the modem using Ethernet today, then you don't need the Ethernet adapter. Ethernet port looks like a slightly larger telephone jack.
