Why won't my Acer start up?

Acer Aspire 5517 wont start, how do I get my files off of a dead computer?

  • My Acer Aspire 5517 died yesterday and now wont turn on. When I turn it on the fan runs for about 2 seconds and then stops, there is no sign of life beside that. I'm freaking out as my entire life is on that computer and I just bought an external hard drive but hadn't gotten around to moving everything to it yet :( Is there anyway I can safely remove the hard drive myself so i will be able to extract my files on to the new laptop I buy? How would I go about removing the hard drive? And once it is out, how would I move/extract the data on to the new Laptop? I'm looking at getting a Toshiba Notebook to replace it. Please help! B

  • Answer:

Save yourself from total meltdown. Go PAY to have it done. If you have to ask how, then most likely you are going to mess it up. No offence intended but some jobs are better left to the pros. Truth man.

Go to a Best Buy, they have their geek squad that can take your files from your computer. My sisters computer was killed by her 1 year old and she had to do this. It was costly. Suggestion for future, don't get an Acer. They are only expected to last 1 yr. They are cheap and nice to use as long as you just use it for internet.

External enclosures are like this if you can buy them in South Australia. check this link out to view the 2.5 External harddrive enclosures or usb/sata hard drive connectors http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=2777

go ahead remove the hd, place your hd in the case of the external drive and copy all your stuff unto the next computer

The symptoms you describe indicate a BIOS failure or hardware failure. You're best bet is to Acer's technical support involved. If you have another availible computer download the BIOS for your computer onto a usb flash drive and see whether it is hardware or BIOS that is the cause. On my Acer it is F2 to enter ther bios. I hope it helps!!

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/taking-apart-acer-aspire-5517-laptop/ Use the link above to get to your hard drive. Once you get it out you buy a SATA/IDE to USB adapter and connect the hard drive to the new laptop you get. It'll show up as a removable disk, and then you can just drag and drop the files onto your new laptop Edit: Usually most electronic stores sell them. I know our local Radioshack carries them and if not a quick search online shout find you one.
