How are DVD's and CD's made?

MacBook won't read DVDs or CDs?

• My MacBook is about two years old and until now has never had any issues of any kind. I rarely use the disk drive (haven't touched it in months) so I only noticed this problem today. I inserted a DVD, and the computer made all the usual noises it does when reading a disk, but for longer than usual, and then spit the disk back out. The DVD didn't show up on my desktop and DVD Player did not open. I tried two more DVDs (all were clean and scratch-free) and the same thing happened both times. I then tested three CDs. It read the first one, a burned CD of a high school choir concert, as blank. The other two store-bought CDs were treated the same as the DVDs. My MacBook is no longer under warranty and I do not have an Apple Care plan. Is this something easily fixed that I can take care of myself? If not, how much do you think it will cost to have it fixed at an Apple store?
