Good inexpensive laptop for Windows? (700 or less?

I need help choosing a laptop?

  • I will be a freshman in high school in September and I want a new laptop. Right now, I have the Dell Mini, but I don’t like it all that much… - Preferably under $700 (if possible). - It has to be Dell - Something that can run Windows XP, Windows 7, and/or Vista. - I don’t want it to be as small as the dell mini... preferably something with a 14- 15 inch screen. - It needs to have a CD- ROM/ disc drive thingy, at least 3 USB ports, pretty good sound, good memory and hard drive… I really don’t know all that much about all that technical computer stuff, so…. - I want something that will really last me a long time. - Something good for multitasking and something fast. - I have iTunes and am constantly downloading songs and I play a lot of online games, so something that's kind of meant for that type of stuff. - Something good for doing homework, like power point presentations. -I am always bringing my laptop to my friends’ house and on vacations so, something easy to carry around, portable—good battery life. - Oh, and a built in webcam. So, is there a laptop that has all that or at least most of it? Thank you(:

  • Answer:

Dell Inspiron 14r or Dell Inspiron 17R. They are both the same except the screen size and have the brand new Intel Core i3 and 4GB memory.

The second link looks pretty good. I would recommend getting the new i3 processor also (or anything better eg: i5). You could probably get the same specs for less in a Inspiron 14R but the Vistro as previously mentioned should be reliable. I've never used a Vistro so I'm not sure about the speaker quality.

Dell Latitude E5400. Upgrade the CPU to P8400, upgrade to Windows 7, and get 2 or 3GB of RAM. http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/notebooks/laptop_latitude_e5400/pd.aspx?refid=laptop_latitude_e5400&s=bsd&cs=04 Also the E5410 is on sale and more powerful, but usually goes for around $700, out of your budget. If you're purchasing soon it's a better option. Upgrade the processor to the Core i3-350m, upgrade to Windows 7, and RAM to 2 or 3GB. http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/notebooks/latitude-e5410/pd.aspx?refid=latitude-e5410&s=bsd&cs=04%5D The Inspiron mark suggested is another idea. However the Latitudes are business-class machines with better support, and are also built significantly tougher.
