My laptop keeps shutting down?

  • Hi. I have an HP Altec which I use for gaming. Recently, when I start loading my game, it starts shutting down. I don't know what the problem is. It wasn't like this before. I don't think it's because of heating problems 'cause before this happened, the vents got clogged and we had it replaced. So the air vents are running smoothly now. I don't know why it keeps shutting down. Sometimes it's running perfectly, but there are times where it just shuts down. And then whenever I open it, there's a message that says "start up repair" or something like that. Then it shuts down in the middle of repairing. I don't want to have our technician check it just yet, 'cause there are times that it works fine and then he'd tell that there aren't any problem. Then all of a sudden, it would shut down when he's already left. Ugh. I am so bloody frustrated with this laptop. It's only been around for a year or so and it's already like this. What do you think is the problem? I don't think it's related to the game 'cause before, it can handle the game and the specs are high enough for the game I'm playing. But what do you think? Is it a virus? I don't know anymore. Please help :(

  • Answer:

there may be hardware problem or software problem. 1st you have to check software errors. a).get backup your personal things b).full format your hard disk and re install your OS(windows 7, xp) c).after re installing os firstly install a good virus guard then other software most probably above step will solve your problem. if not, 2nd thing you have a hardware problem on your laptop(heating or input output problem in main board). go to good hardware technician check and get a repair

most probably you switched the fan (if you did) with one with higher power requirement and this is killing your system. I can't see any other reason from what you said

You have a virus. You will need to reinstall the OS, get all your goodies off first or you will lose them. If you take your machine to a shop, tell them to save your goodies, and I will bet new York to a brick you have a useless free AV

I'd say it is a virus

I first took a look at my power supply since it was a 300w supply, and my card needed 350 (or so it said). So I changed that, and it worked for about a day, then it had the same problems. I then checked the settings for Overdrive to see if my card was defaulted to Overclock, I found out it was running at the slowest possible settings. I scoured the internet for possible solutions on the Radeon X850 (my card). When I stopped and Thought about it, I realized that my card had worked like a charm when I first got it, and I was able to jack up all the settings on every game I played to the extreme. The problem only started happening about 1 year and a half after I bought the card. One thing caught my eye though, and that was a suggestion that either I had a defective card, or physically something was wrong with the card. So I popped open my case to look at my video card. At first glance nothing seemed wrong with it. I unplugged the card and removed it from the system thinking maybe I could unscrew the fan and see if any dust was clogged in it. Thats when I looked at the very end of the fan where air was supposed to be coming out. I saw that a very thin lair of dust had collected and clogged the entire ventilation for the fan on the video card. I only saw it when I turned the video card on its side. After I removed it, I popped it back in the case, started up and ran temperature monitor

As far as i see the answers above. Yes a virus. there are some few things you could do to fix this. WARNING!: Save Any important files or documents (may be lost). Have you try using system restore to restore to a point before you get the virus? if that don't work try Installing antivirus or virus removal program to delete the virus? if that don't work then format the hard drive and reinstall the os. If you couldn't do any of those, suggest you should take it to a shop.
