How to use a laptop screen as just a screen?

How do I fix use a recovery disk when the laptop can't even reach to the login screen?

  • My laptop is really messed up and I mean REALLY messed up. When I start it up it goes to a blue screen saying that it detected a problem etc.I can't even use safe mode or any other modes because it says the same thing. So I have a recovery disk and I want to know how to use it without going to the login screen and logging in. (or whatever it is called)

  • Answer:

When your computer starts there will be 2 options in the upper right corner, usually when the company logo is displayed. One is to boot into your BIOS, the other is to do a one time boot, mine is F12 or something like that. Insert the disk, restart your computer, and hit one of the two F buttons that are displayed, you kinda have to be quick. Once you push the correct one you can choose to boot from your CD/DVD drive. Do that, you vista recovery disk will start up, choose repair, then choose startup repair and odds are everything will be fixed. Has worked for me 2 times already, it's amazing :)

turn on the computer open the cd drive place the recovery cd in then turn the computer off, turn the computer back on and the computer will hopefully load the recovery disk then it should start the recovery process then you follow the on screen instructions and then hopefully your computer will be all good

There are often messages too quick to read on getting a blue screen. Capture these on a digital/video camera. This might explain the situation. You probably need a recovery disk which has a boot. Try your manufacturer.

Boot from the recovery cd.

Put the restore disk in the drive and see if it gives you a choice to boot from the cd. If so you are home free. If not then when the laptop starts press F2 or DEL or ESC or whatever it takes to get into the bios and when there change the boot order to boot from cd first. Then when you reboot it will start from the cd and you can restore.

If it is a manufacturer's System Recovery disk, you're supposed to boot up with it

Use the bios setup utility to enable booting from the CD drive. Then boot from the recovery disk and follow the instructions.
