How Do I set up a wireless internet connection on my laptop?

Im trying to figure out how to setup my laptop to the internet. I have a wireless 4G internet modem and since my laptop is old I have to use a D-Link Wireless G Notebook adapter card, so if i have a wireless card installed and a wireless modem, how do i set this up? ive never done this before so does any one have step by step instructions on how to do this? help would be greatly appreciated! Oh and my laptop is windows XP, if any one needs to know that

your modem is up and running, leave it running put your card in a small screen telling you to install will appear choose quit at the bottom right corner of the screen, a monitor would have appear when the card was put in put mouse on monitor, right click choose: view... from view choose your modem's name or number click it and that's it, unless you put a password on it type password and finish
Did you install the wireless D-Link adapter software on your lap top using the CD that came with the wireless D-Link adapter ? What is the model number of the wireless D-Link adapter ? You can use any wireless adapter as A/B/G/N are forward and backward compatible. In the system task try at bottom right of screen click the single computer icon, click view all available wireless networks, click yours, enter password if secured network, click connect.
