How to get my wireless card to work with Ubuntu?

How do I get a netgear wireless card to work on ubuntu?

  • I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on the Asus Eeepc 900HD. When I downloaded Ubuntu, my built in wireless card would not be recognized, so I bought a Netgear USB wireless card. When I opened the Terminal and typed in lsusb it said : Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0846:6a00 NetGear, Inc. WG111 v254 Mbps Wireless [Real Tek RT8187L] so the device is recognized, but when I click on enable wireless it says the device is not ready. What do I do?

  • Answer:

You may need to connect via ethernet once to allow your Ubuntu to download ans install the proper drivers. Mine is internal but also based on the RT8187L chipset and it's working with 9.10 (and before in 9.04) native drivers. Alternatively use the drivers below - select Unix (Linux) - following the instructions from Realtek which you'll find inside the package. Should work fine too.
