How do i connect my old printer to my new laptop?

  • i have a usb cord that connects to my laptop, it shows up on my control panel as "unspecified usb printer" after tht i dont know what to do, because i try to print and it doesnt show up in my "printer section" pleasee help! im really bad with technology....

  • Answer:

If it is available, you will need to install the proper device driver. I say "if" because, depending on how old your printer is and what version of Windows OS you are using, the printer could be incompatible. The best place to look for the correct device driver is the installation CD which came with the printer; otherwise, check on the printer maker's website. So, if you were using HP, you would start looking at www.hp.com.

BEFORE you ever connect a USB printer to the machine you must install the proper drivers for that printer.

It sounds like a driver issue and that you`ll have to install it manually (no biggie). Go ahead and get the printer model & name. Google for the driver saying something like "Lexmark 180 driver for windows xp". It should pull up the specific manufacturer`s website to download the correct driver. Download it to your laptop`s desktop. Then, google how to install a printer driver on a windows computer. (msdn.microsoft.com is one option) I can`t remember the exact steps to guide you correctly. Good luck!

I may be wrong, but if I'm NOT, you might have to "recycle" your printer for a "bargain" on a new one! I bought a new Dell printer a year before I got my current HP desktop, but the way things move so fast, wouldn't you know...I got the ONE printer that I can't use with this stupid thing! Or is it the printer that's stupid? NO...it's the COMPANIES, who practice, as my dad used to say "built-in obsolescence", making things obsolete and useless far sooner than they should've been, to get more profit! So, after trying to download a driver (a few actually) and failing, I was notified by HP that my fairly NEW Dell printer was not "compatible" w/the 64-bit version of Windows 7! My choice: either DOWNgrade to a 32 bit or get anew printer. Luckily, I'd got one for about $70 on sale, so I can either recycle it or save it in case my new computer crashes and I've got to go back to Windows XP again! (Am I a pessimist??? YOU decide!). OH...your answer! Just give in. The tekkies and companies are all in league and they've got you. Fork over the money for a new printer (wait for a "trade-in" thing) and go with it. Don't be upset. This will probably happen again in an few years.....
