Why wont my laptop play my DVD's and CD's?

Ive had my laptop for about 2 years...its a Toshiba Satellite! Its always played my films and musics fine but recently this message came up.. Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer. It then says either close or web help..but after clicking on web help it charges you to install :( bad times! can anybody help please? thankyouuu x

Instead of using Windows Media Player, download and use VLC instead, which is Open Source, and free.
