First off i'm not a mac hater. I just have a lot of reservations after working with them in corporate environments. MacBook Air is thin and light. But it's honestly not that much lighter compared to a lot of other UPLs (ultra portable laptops) and it has some serious draw backs. No wired network. Wireless sucks. Plain and simple. it's handy but very unreliable. Yes, you can get a USB dongle to have wired ethernet but if i'm paying for a UPL i don't want to haul around a dongle with me everywhere i go. You can't really upgrade it. Basically everything is soldered on to the main board, i have heard of a few replacement hard drives but nothing for sure. The ram is not upgradeable so if you get it make sure you get 4gb. Core 2 processors. This applies both the Air and Macbooks. Core 2 is way old. I built a desktop with a better proc in it 2 years ago for $700. I'd recommend an i5 but that's only in the macbook pros and starts at $1700 (ouch). If you're going to be interfacing with a larger network, such as a university or a business, I'd avoid the whole mac thing all together or plan on installing bootcamp. if you don't believe me look up all the problems with os x and NFS. Pros: macs are veeery stable, horray for BSD, and user friendly with great, cheap software packages. Basically, unless the Air, basically an iPad with a keyboard, is not going to be your main source of computing go for it. If you want something that is a little more robust get a Macbook or macbook pro 13.3 inch of course cause the 15" much more.
