Audio Recording Problem with Laptop?

My computer is having trouble with recording audio; whenever I record audio directly to the computer, the sound is fine for a couple seconds, then it becomes muffled. I'm sure this is a problem with the computer, because when recording to an external device there are no problems, but when recording directly to the computer (like with a microphone or webcam), the sound is muffled. I am wondering what specifically needs to be replaced or updated and how I can go about fixing this. Disable all software's that are using the mic except the one you're using. Try latest drivers.
