Why won't my laptop start up?

  • My sister gave me her Dell Inspiron 600M. The battery was partially torn so I used it for a while until it gave out. Before, my sister used my brother's chord from his laptop to charge the computer because this wasn't the first time the chord went bad. Now, when I try to plug in his chord to the computer, it won't start up. I've tried several times, but it doesn't seem to work. My brother has a Dell Inspiron 1501. The chord's worked for the 600M before, so why not now? I don't know if I should buy a new chord or get someone to look at the laptop. Any ideas?

    The power socket probably broke of the motherboard. This happens a lot when people aren't careful to not bump or pull the cord while it's plugged in. You can take it to a computer repair place and they should be able to re-solder it to the board. The same thing happened to my sisters laptop before.

Power Supply is the #1 reason why a laptop will not turn on so if the power supply still works on your brothers computer than i is likely internal. If it is internal it is best to have an expert look into it as the average person doesn't have the ability to repair such issues.

The power supply (where u plug the cord in) socket is probably broken off the board. Worst off you need a new motherboard, otherwise it may be possible to re-solder it. Take it in to a repair shop or to Dell.

Yep I've got an idea... don't buy Dell... cheap and shoddy... How on earth did your battery become "partially torn"????? If you're using the power lead from another laptop, have you checked that the lead has exactly the same output as the old one? If the output is different, you've probably melted some of your cheapo dell internals...

It's just very likely to be another bad cord. Much cheaper to try a new one than to pay someone to find out the same thing. And if you're wrong, you still have a spare new cord.
