Sound failure on my pc desktop?

sound failure on my pc desktop, any help is appreciated? winxp: homebuilt desktop Issue: My Creative Labs Audigy soundcard seemed to die,no sound, lost speaker icon too. I ran scandisk/defrag/virus- no resolve! I took out the Audigy card and deleted the drivers. Then re-seated the card and reinstalled the drivers=nothing! I once again deleted the drivers, removed the card again. I installed a brand new generic pci card & drivers. Nothing again! I tried various PCI slots, and the board is fine, no issues w the pci slots. I went to system/hardware device mgr/ saw the yellow marks on the manager screen. I also went to Control Panel/ sounds and audio devices/ and it stated on top that there is NO audio device( this happened w/ both cards!). I dont have a way to restore my pc, except get ripped by the local shop and all he's offering is to re install XP for $100.00.I do have a winxp but no s/n, and im not sure if that would restore it. thanks for the good help out there.

Answer:
Theres yellow marks on the devices you say. Updating the drivers might fix the problem. A good way to solve problems with plug and play cards is to use device manager to remove the card from the O.S. Restart the system, and allow the card's componenets to be redetected. This installs a fresh copy of the software and reinserts registry entries.

In control panel, go to ADD HARDWARE. Select the YES option and then click the first thing that has to do with sound/audio. Click NEXT and if is does not say THIS DEVICE IS WORKING PROPERLY, click finish and your computer will fix the problem for you. Repeat these steps with your other sound/audio selectable things in the list until there is nothing left. Then restart your computer and everything should be working fine.
