Can i use an old hard drive for a bit of extra space? Dual hard driving?
-
I got the hard drive out of my old computer and want to put it in my new computer, just for some extra space. The hard drive currently in the new computer is using a sata cable and the old hard drive was using a ribbon cable. So can I just chuck the old hard drive in using the ribbon cable and use it like some extra storage and can I also get the files that are still on it? New computer is using windows 7, old hard drive came out or a windows 2000.

Answer:
You have to set the hard drive to slave, to do that you must look by where the cables plug in, you will see a set of 8-10 pins, there should be a pit connector, connecting 2 pins together, read the hard drive lable, it should tell you what is slave, and what's master... try that, it should work, if not look it up on Microsoft's webpage

Yes you can use it as long as you want... but if you want to install the hard disk permanently in your new computer better to format it first as you'll get some more space by doing so....
Yes. As long as you an IDE connector (somewhere to plug in that ribbon cable) on your newer computer's motherboard.
Maybe. Not all current computers have a controller for your old hard drive, so you may not be able to mount it internally. Even if you do have the right connector inside, you may have to edit your computers BIOS or EFI settings to make sure that it doesn't try to boot off of the old hard drive, so if you're not tech savvy you may not want to mess around with it. However, you can easily purchase an external enclosure that would let you plug your old hard drive in to a USB port on your new computer. There are plenty of places where you can buy an enclosure online for $20 or less, or you can buy one at a store like Best Buy but end up paying a bit more. Check out sites like Newegg.com or even eBay or Google Shopping. You want a USB IDE 3.5 inch enclosure.
