Is MAC taking over PC gaming?

How hard is it to build a very powerful gaming PC?

  • i am 14 and i just got my first laptop (13" MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz) i decided i really liked computer gaming and, as most people know, Mac's aren't ANY good for gaming. i was reading up on Gaming PC's (has to be a desktop), and i heard you can get a better (and cheaper) machine if you build your own, rather than buy an Alienware or something. i am very good with building and taking apart stuff, and i think im up to the challenge. my friend's dad is also a custom gaming PC builder so i could also go to him if i needed any help. i'd like it to be able to play Crysis on high settings Spec's i'd like Processor: Intel i7 Storage: 500GB RAM: 8GB if possible Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 295 Cooling system: water based Body: Aluminum Drive's: DVD or Bluray (doesnt matter that much to me) Ports: 2 USB, 1 SD, 1 Audio In/Out, Ethernet, charging port can you please give me a rough idea of how much this would cost, and how hard it would be? Thanks =) oh, and one more question, would i be able to run Mac OS X on this? or would it affect the performance? Thanks

  • Answer:

would cost about $1,500 to build. alienware would probably charge three or four grand. it's as difficult as putting together an electronic lego. really the most painful part is installing the motherboard and the back i/o panel. you will need a very nice power supply with all that gear though. something like a corsair 700-800w. and you can't run os x without doing a hackintosh.

hardest part is going to be getting funds together.

First, I've never tried running Apple software on a PC, so I'm not certain. I believe it might be possible, but you'd have to shell out a hell of a lot of money for a sort of separate mini-computer which connects to your motherboard to do so. As for the hardware, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who sells the GTX295 new anymore. You might find one on eBay, but no guarantees on prices. The price of your system also depends on whether you buy budget or high-performance components. For that sort of build you should expect to spend between $1000 and $1500. However, building a water-cooled system is extremely difficult. First off, a complete system, cooling the just the CPU and video card, could run up to $400 itself. Also, such systems require regular maintenance and cleaning as well as specially treated water or chemicals to prevent corrosion and damage to the system. For instance, using tap water would eventually degrade the piping to the point of failure, filling the inside of your computer with water. Second, water-cooling system have to be arranged in a particular manner to prevent a build-up of air in the cooling blocks and pipes. Whatever you choose to do, I wish you good luck and I hope you enjoy your build!
