Answer:
Go to Filehippo.com and download 'Malwarebytes for free and run a scan, then delete everything it finds. If this doesn't fix it reinstall windows but save your photos and music first. You shouldn't need to buy a new pc but you should add 1GB of ram as 512MB isn't enough now days. Crucial.com to find ram type and Newegg.com for best prices.

Maybe you downloaded an XP update recently that's hogging some of your RAM? Before buying a used computer that might have the same problems, you should consider installing more RAM if you have the slots for it. Crucial.com can tell you if your system is upgradable. You can find 2 GB's of RAM for around $20. Also, if you have the XP CD you could try reinstalling windows?
If the dell only has 512mb of ram no but it is time for a better one you really want at least a gig you can pick up dual core machines for less than a $100, have a look on ebay, unless your friend only wants a couple of bucks for it, and up the ram. Seriously ive thrown better machine out
With 512 worth of memory isn't enough to run XP. You might have a lot of TSR'S running. Check taskmanager and see what else is running the the back ground. You typically won't see the full ram installed because of overhead from possible video usage. check Newegg or Tigerdirect price of a decent computer start at about $300.
