What is wrong with my computer? (Tick-tock sound and no display)?

  • So, I recently opened up my computer to see if some spare RAM chips would fit and it was visually evident, without touching or moving or unplugging ANYTHING AT ALL that they wouldn't fit so, I said whatever and put them aside. At this point I noticed my computer was pretty dusty so I got some air spray meant for blowing away dust from the innards of a computer and gave my computer a few hits of that, exactly as I've done in the past to clean dust from this computer, and the dust was gone. Again, I have touched absolutely NOTHING. No unplugging, no touching, no moving anything about or plugging anything in. I've done this before with several computers and it's caused not one problem, ever. Obviously, the power wasn't on, no USB devices were plugged in, I know how to open a computer and perform this kind of routine maintenance safely, however my computer doesn't seem to work this time. Now when I turn it on, I get no display from the monitor (The problem isn't with the monitor, I've tested it with my laptop and it works perfectly) and I hear this tick-tock noise coming from somewhere in the vicinity of the video card, even when the video card isn't inserted. The tick-tock sounds a lot like a dog-clicker or the sound TiVO used to make when your rewound or paused the programs. I know it's not my hard drive failing since I know what THAT sounds like all too well and the sound isn't coming from anywhere near it and I've never received a single error report while using my computer. It's just under a year old and I have no idea why this could be happening. I can't stress enough how very little I've done; all I did was dust it out using a method and product that is supposed to be safe and has never caused me trouble before. PLEASE help, I need this computer to make a living, I have no alternative.

  • Answer:

If you have a DVM check the output of your power supply. I have heard them make odd sounds while failing. Could be just coincidence or maybe you blew some dust or other material into a critical area

I don't know but I would suggest if it is still under warranty you might be able to get some help there. Otherwise you could unplug all cards, cables & CMOS battery, then plug them all back together again carefully.

the ticking is most likley just the computer working, but try reconecting cables and wires inside then try again, worked for me
