My computer has a nvidia 9400 video card and I just bought Call of Duty Black Ops. Bad idea I guess....?
-
I am having problems playing this game at even the lowest settings. I have decided it's time to get a new video card with at least a gig of memory. If I had a 9400 in my computer what is my best bet as far as a new video card for say $250.00. I am not sure what mother board I have and not sure what video card will be compatible. Please help! Thanks! Is it possible that there are other reasons for having this bad lag? Such as not enough ram? I thought it was the video card inability to function with the superior graphics...

You could start by telling us what processor you're using and the wattage of your power supply. Mobos generally support all sorts of video cards -- you just need to have PCIE 16x slot. It looks like this: http://www.viperlair.com/articles/editorials/pcie/images/pci_express_001.JPG A good card for the $200 price range would probably be the Radeon 6850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908&cm_re=6850-_-14-102-908-_-Product And spend the remainder $50~70 on a 500 watt power supply if you haven't already got one. 500 watt corsair http://www.newegg.com/Producthttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139018 or 600 watt corsair http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139019 you will need a decent CPU to handle Black ops, preferably a high speed dual core or quad core. BO currently lags for everyone at the moment, it's a bit of a software glitch. Even Core i7 users experience lag -- this will be fixed soon.

Yes, your video card is way too low-end.. The GeForce 9400GT is just half the speed of $50 cards like the Radeon 4650 and GeForce 9500GT. However there could be other factors holding you back. What CPU does your computer have, and how much system RAM? Note that the amount of video memory on a graphics card is pretty unimportant. Having 1gb does NOT make a card faster than 512mb models. A GeForce GT220 with 1gb is still much slower than a GT240 with 512mb. Having a gig of video memory simply only helps when playing at very high resolutions (1920x1080 and higher). But at 1680x1050 and lower, there's no advantage to 1gb models, because only 512mb of video memory is ever used. http://www.hardware-revolution.com/mistakes-when-buying-video-card/ For Black Ops, you don't need a $250 card... even $125 cards like the Radeon HD 5750 and GeForce GTS 450 can easily play the COD games maxed. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121393 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102859 http://www.techspot.com/review/240-ati-radeon-hd-5670/page4.html If you wanted to play tougher titles like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, something around $170 like the GTX 460 is a great choice. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121390 You'll probably need to spend $50-$75 on a new power supply anyway, since most off-the-shelf computers are built with weak psus that cannot support midrange gaming cards. Something like this can handle anything up to $150 cards like the GTS 450 and Radeon 5770: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371004 While these can handle more powerful cards in the $200-$250 category: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004
I went to amazon's site and everyone gave the game a bad rating for that very reason. Horrendous lag - single player as well as multiplayer. That being said , without knowing the specs on your machine I can't say there aren't problems with your system. One place to see what is needed is http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ - go to the game you want to test for. If you want to know your specs get CPUID. It will give you what is installed.
Its not all about your video card. Do this first before you do anything else. Check the system req for the game then update your video card and make sure your resolution is set at native.
