Computer cannot start Windows XP. What is happening?

Blue screen on windows 7 and xp?

  • My desktop has been giving me a blue screen lately. This started happening when i installed a copy of Windows 7 ultimate. While on that OS, it would sometimes unexpectedaly shut down or display a blue screen. Also when i would power it up sometimes, it would require to go through start up repair and it would take a really long time to start up. I installed a copy of Windows XP, thinking this would be a problem solver, but my computer just restarted the same as it did before and the error message said it recovered from a serious error, which turned out to be blue screen. At the same time that I installed Windows 7, I had just upgraded my memory. All drivers are up to date also. Any help with this problem would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

It would help to know the content of the blue screen and your hardware specs This is likely to be an overheating or memory problem. Boot to the Win7 disk and run the memory checker and open the case to check for dust/dirt and slow or non functional fans.

Make sure your system is not infected by viruses. Download a good antivirus software such as free avast and scan the entire system. Remove any infected files that found. Take care that your virus definitions are too up-to-date. Your registry may contain several broken entries which cause serious runtime errors and thereby blue screen of death. Clean it with the help of Reginout and restart your system. If the problem still persists, then change your RAM or clean it with a soft cloth.

I just formatted my HD last week. I did a clean install of Windows 7 ultimate. It worked great for awhile than after a year things were slow.Must have been some bad programs I downloaded or a virus or lots of viruses. If you have the Windows 7 ultimate disk you need to save what you need and format your HD and do a clean install. You ll need to get a new serial # from MS after it's in. But the process took me about an hour and I have a1000 gig HD. Its fast now but it will take me weeks to reload everything again. After you do the clean install first thing you need to do is get on line and do your antivirus program and set you system restore for that day ,then do all the other stuff. Anyway, shut your computer off with the disk in and restart it it should give you an option to custom install . If not restart it again and hit the delete button it will bring up your bios to boot from disk. then restart it .MS tech. will get you through it free if you call them. MS is 1800-6427676. Good luck

Try running some diagnostics from a boot cd. "Hirens boot cd works well" (make sure you have all your data backed up" I would focus on memory / Hard drive. Though if you google the message you get on the blue screen it may give you more of an idea. With computer trouble shooting it's a process of elimination more then anything else.
