The file remains on the hard drive even the its reference from the hard drive index is deleted from your file system. The next time your computer needs space in that part of hard drive the file is overwritten.

you can never erase something from a hdd when you delete it it kills off some of the sectors which is why hdd die out after deleting/formatting them after time. only a few of the blocks are usable after you overwrite a file so it stays permanently on your hdd. do a little googling on it and find out more about it
