Probably, but why take the chance of wasting money. Buy one now, add the second later when the price does down.

That's some monster! Twin 6850's are a bit of overkill and twin 580's would be WAY overkill! besides the 700W PSU would just barely run them...850W would be better. Save your money and a headache just get one 580 for top performance with out the need to pay the Electric company for it! Most games cant use more than 1.5GB of on board ram anyway. Like others say you cant SEE the difference past 34 FPS

If you only have a single monitor, a single 580 1.5GB will be enough. You'll get more than 140 fps. You don't need 300 fps after all (Please note that human eye, including yours, can't tell the difference after 30 fps). If you still want to waste your money for nothing, get the 3GB version of gtx 580. Cheaper and better.

HUGE difference. First difference is that Nvidia drivers are generally more stable than ATI/AMD. The performance comparison is one that is sorta ridiculous to even consider. If one was comparing the 6990 or even the 6970 then there may be a fair fight. However in this case the 580 destroys the 6850.T make it a fair fight I configured the comparison for 6850 in crossfire and a SINGLE 580. The 580 even bested the Crossfire setup in a few benchmarks.http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/302?vs=305 . If you have the budget to handle a single 580 I would not hesitate for a moment and buy it. The price VS performance sweet spots are imho the 6970 and the 570 ATI & nvidia respectively. I have decided on the http://www.amazon.com/MSI-N570GTX-Twin-Frozr-Power/dp/B004XVMAKU/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1312765545&sr=1-7 . You do however receive a LIFETIME warranty if you choose the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130595 . You could also save yourself a $100 or more and build this beast of a gaming rig yourself too. I would invest in the single 580.2
