What is the Size limit for a NTFS partition in Windows XP?

  • I was just wondering what the maximum size for a NTFS partition is in window XP. I recently bought a new 640 gb hard drive, and it has been having some problems that a new hard drive should not have. Constant CRC errors and BSOD. Its possible that I will just have to accept that the drive is defective and send it back for a replacement, but I am trying to rule out all the other possibilities first. Now..more about the drive. Its a Western Digital Caviar Blue SATA drive. I partitioned the whole 640 gb and I'm wondering if that could be causing my problems. Is 640 gb too much for a single partition?

  • Answer:

The size of the partition is not your problem, I have formatted 1TB hard drive and havent had any problems. Run disk checks on the drive via menu or at boot up and if it still happens, you can try reformatting he hard drive and if worse come to worst it has become defective.consider the time from out of box to your computer, it might be DOA and should be returned.

The limit for an NTFS partition is 2^64 (2 to the 64 power) You should not have an issue with partition limit. Your hard drive may be damaged in some way I would call up Western Digitals support line before you take it back.
