Answer:
Disk Defragmenter: "A computer program included in Microsoft Windows designed to increase access speed by rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations." Example: One file of 1Mb size is stored in two locations each 0.5Mb in size. Accessing this file is faster if your computer puts both file fragments in the same location as one contiguous file. Positive: Your computer gets faster (if you haven't defragged it in a while). Negative: Your computer will be slower for an hour or so while the defragmenting takes place. Overall: Well worth it to defragment regularly (like once a month or every couple months).

the os in your computer is a crapppy house keeper, and writes files to the hard drive in a bit of a messy maner. when your hard drive is fragmented, the file are scattered across your drive in parts and pieces. the more it is fragmented, the longer it takes for your pc to find all the data pieces, its turns more in to a scavenger hunt for your hard drive. defragmenting your hard drive takes all those parts and pieces and organizes them into the the proper order and place where they belong. it will speed up you computer when it comes to starting up, opening programs and files. the only downside to fragmenting is the time it takes to doing the defrag. especially if it hasn't been done in a while. it is recomended to do so about once a month, done regularly it dosnt take very long.
Defragging is essential to prevent HDD slowdowns and problems. Its just a normal maintenance task which puts back files that get fragmented (which happens in the process of adding/deleting/editing files) back together in a sequential order in order to speed up data access. This means files and programs and will open without lags and it prevents slowdowns caused by fragmentation. In other words like its easier for you to find what you want in a neatly organized book shelf as opposed to one where all books lie scattered, the HDD can function faster if the files are arranged in an orderly fashion rather than fragmented and scattered. No negatives. Windows saves files but not neatly - like throwing files into a filing cabinet rather than putting them in carefully. Thus files get defragmented. Disk Defragmenter tidies everything up and your computer may run slightly faster as a result
Windows usually does not necessarily write all the files in a contiguous block to the disk. Instead, it may split up the file into pieces i.e 'fragments' and fit them where ever it finds free space first: some fragments can be in between other files, while the rest are together in some other location on the disk etc. So, when reading the file, the drive has to do more work picking up these scattered fragments from all over the disk and it takes more time. Because of all this, overall system performance decreases and the PC slows down since the hardrive is usually the slowest component of the PC (it's mechanical) and fragmentation makes it even slower. During defragmentation with software called a 'defragger' these file fragments are collected and rearranged in order in a single contiguous block for each file. When it does this for the whole drive, it can take a long time to defrag if the drive is heavily fragmented. A defragmented drive has many benefits: performance is better, drive life is improved, data recovery in case of a drive failure is easier, etc. So keep the drive regularly defragged.
