Mac OS X Help ( a little new to mac os x)?

  • I need help with mac os x i have a old imac g3 that has been upgraded to mac os x panther. On the hard drive it still has mac os 9 system files. Is it okay if i delete the mac os 9 files? will it still run mac os x without a problem? Also, is there a way i can dual boot with the imac g3? thanks for the help!

  • Answer:

Don't delete the Mac OS 9 system files unless you don't want to run ANY classic applications. Classic needs the Mac OS 9 files to run (So you can run Mac OS 9 apps in OS X). If you delete them, Mac OS X will be fine, but you won't be able to use Classic. If you go into system preferences and then Startup Disk, you can probably select the System Folder you want to start up with (There should be 2, Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X). Enjoy Mac OS X!

Can you move the files to an External Hard drive? We use three of them for all sorts of files.

Unless you wish to run old software that requires the old operating system you will be fine deleting the files. When you say dual boot if you mean install Windows as well as Os-X then the answer is no. The old mac g3 does not have the processor necessary to support a windows installation. You might be able to use an old copy of parallels or virtual pc for mac and install windows xp as a virtual machine but not a dual boot.

Yes, it will work without the OS 9 files. dual boot Idk, since I haven't desecrated my Mac with the dark system.
