What power supply will work?

What sort of 450-550W power supply will fit into and work with a Gateway DX4200-09?

  • I've tried two power supplies. One fit perfectly, I was able to seat it fine and it didn't wobble or anything when I moved the tower around, but it was apparently rated incorrectly for my motherboard and it wouldn't read my harddrive. Alright, fair enough. I got the second power supply, the plugs fit just fine, but it was physically too small to be seated correctly, so it would've been rather dangerous to attempt to either forcefully seat it (and risk damaging my computer) or (a wild, stupid idea) leave it out of the case (which I know is quite stupid due to the risk of both damaging the computer and myself). I've been told by word of mouth that the PSU for this particular computer is apparently a custom form-factor to make sure Gateway is the only company to receive business for this computer, but I highly doubt this as I've heard stories of people upgrading this computer successfully. However, they did not give any details which is immensely frustrating because twice I've been burned on getting the wrong PSU. Any suggestions?

  • Answer:

I'm going to research it for you cause there are some towers that only take a certain psu ,had a old gateway that i was fixing up but the person who gave it to me broke the panels on it and i just took out the motherboard but tried a different psu and it fit fine there should be a universal plate on the back to fit most psu's the way the screw holes align some times just flipping the psu over to get the hole to align, get back with you in a little bit, edit -okay i look at the back plate at cnet .com under site reviews for the dx4200-09 almost any 400-500watt atx power supply should work for your pc,cooler master, thermaltake, antec ,etc. when you hook up the first one besides the 20+4 connector to the board is there a 8 pin or four pin connector on the board you left off from the power supply, you can e-mail about the first one you try and i see if i can find a compatible model that should work
