I can't get my old computer to work?
-
Okay so I've had this computer for a long time. It's a desktop and I'm not quite sure of the name but on the computer it says: Monarch Computer Systems and AMD Athlon xp. It's a pretty old computer but it does have a dvd slot as well as a cd rom slot so it can't be too terribly old. Anyways, I have a laptop that I use now, but I still used the old computer to play Sims 2. Every now and then it would be a little slow, and sometimes have problems starting up. I often had to do this thing where I had to turn it off, and turn off the outlet switch and then start it back up and then it would work fine. Now whenever I try and start it up it says "Windows could not continue start up because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM you can press 'r' to go back to startup menu and try again" I have tried pressing 'r' then it restarts itself and just does the same thing over again. I know most of you are gonna say take it to a computer repair place, but I wanted to ask on here first before I did that because my family really doesn't have a lot of money and Computer repairs are NOT cheap. I'm not a genius when it comes to this kind of stuff but any advice will help. So if anybody has any advice or tips, go for it.

Answer:
What you have is hard drive going bad. Sectors on hard drive are corrupted or damaged, the real solution would be replace the hard drive, since you do not have money or know now to replace a hard drive. The next solution is weak work around, but the cost is nothing but you will need to know how to install Windows XP from a install disk. Would be nice if you had XP with SP3 install disk. By re-installing XP and re-format of hard drive, this will mark out the bad sectors so you cannot write to this area. If you are not comfortable re-installing windows, maybe someone you could help for free. If me, I would replace the hard drive with newer one (good use one with less years). I have old XP around on working system, the computer is on it's third hard drive. Other I have done is updated the BIOS for newer hard drives.

Try to boot it with the install cd. maybe you can repair boot files
That system 32 file is rather important. I think your best bet is to put a windows xp installation disk in turn it on and mash the f8 or f12 whichever key it is to open the boot menu and once that's open choose boot from disc an reinstall windows
You will need a Windows XP cd or recovery console cd. Turn on the computer and enter the startup console (usually is the ESC, F1, F2, F11 key) Go to boot settings and select your cd/dvd drive to the first boot option Restart the computer Windows CD will have an option to enter Recovery Console and follow the steps. it will scan your system for corrupt/missing system files and replace them with the ones on the cd. ---- this is the easiest way to fix it... there are other harder methods which you would need to google and spend a lot of time on.
