Why do I keep running out of disk space?

How can i free up as much space on my macs startup disk as possible?

  • I bought my computer from a flea market probably last september. It seemed to have been refreshed to its original settings. i have an ibook g4 running mac os x 10.5.8...It worked fine up till about a few weeks ago when I keep getting these messages telling me to free up startup disk space. But i dont know how it could be full because the only things that could really take up space is my music on itunes, but i only have about 2000 songs if that. So ive been deleting songs about 100 at a time and the message will go away for about a day then the disk gets full again and i havent downloaded anything in between deleting songs and the message appearing again. my HD is 37 gb so i know i havent used 36 gigs like they say i did. i need to know what could be taking up all this space and where to look. thank you please answer

    Your best bet is to move your music files to an external drive and play them from there via iTunes. When you delete files on a Mac, it order for disk space to be updated is to shutdown and reboot. Macs write other data to a drive which occupies it's own space of course. How about the internet cache, Home folder for occupying space? However it does sound like something else may be going on with the system. Sounds like something is writing to the disk all the time. Do you have a malware protector on the system? If not I recommend that you put Virus Barrier on it after erasing and reinstalling the OS and your files (I hope you're using Time Machine for backing up the system.) Also a standard maintenance application to run maintenance and purge files from the system such as archived logs. (Personally, I use and prefer Titanium Onyx).

Try backing up your files to an external hard disk such as My Passport by WD. Then, delete a bunch of stuff you won't need often; you can just open them from the hard disk. If that doesn't work, just schedule an appointment with the Apple Store. They'll know what to do.
