How do i know what type of ram stick to buy for my PC memory?

My PC was built awhile ago but i have since upgraded almost everything motherboards drivers etc. I just dont know where to go on my pc to see what specific ram stick i need to buy also how much more ram i need. When i go to system properties is says Computer: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz, 256 MB of RAM can anyone help me out...do i need to know what type of motherboard i have????

  • Answer:

When your PC was built, it should come with a motherboard manual. That's your first source of infomation to check for the type of RAM it uses. Otherwise you can download and use SIW to check your motherboard and RAM: http://www.gtopala.com/ In my experience, Pentium 4 processors usually support DDR DIMM RAMs. Speeds range from 266 - 400Mhz

Shut down machine & disconnect the power cable. Remove the side cover. Some Mother Boards have both SDR & DDR RAM slots. Remove the RAM card. If the card has one slot cut in the bottom, then it's DDR Ram. The card should have a decal attached . e.g. 256 MB 400 MHz DDR. If the card has two slots in the bottom, then it's SDR RAM. Buy either one or the other, but do not mix To know how much RAM the Mother Board can handle. Locate the Mother Board model number. Go to the Pentium web site & enter the model number. It will list all the specs for the Mother Board ÕÕ ç
