How to DIY my own computer? Where to buy a DIY computer?

When to get a new computer?

  • I bought my computer like 3-4 years ago and it is super dated. I was before I took computer egeneering in highschool (before I learned how to build them) and I bought it at best buy. I plan on buying a DIY kit from newegg.com. I've upgraded my current desktop the best I could, It has a new video card and power supply but the motherboard, ram, and processor are too outdated to upgrade. Ok, now for my question. How soon will AM3+ processors and ddr3 ram become outdated? I don't want to buy a new computer and put it together and then in 3 months ddr4 and am4 processors come out.

  • Answer:

Wait for Intel's Iyv Bridge. Even if you don't want to get one, AMD will drop their prices when they come out. AMD's Roadmap, let me see.. They're apparently not planning on updates to their high-end CPUs after Piledriver. Steamroller seems to be in 2013. I dunno, I think I'd wait for IvyBridge, but they don't seem to have anything to come up AMD wise.

far as i can see the AM3+ socket and ddr3 ram will stay a while longer atleast i havent read anything about new upcoming socket for amd or a new ddr for ram ofc even if there would be a release for ddr4 ram or similar its not like its gonna change within a year. takes some time you know also AMD dont change socket that often if you remember how long AM2+ or AM3 socket lasted, compared to intel sockets that is AMD ushally make sure it fits the same socket
